Does Your Word Mean Anything

March 1 2015

There was a time when people gave their word it meant something. They would go out of their way to make sure that their promise was fulfilled and if they could not carry it out, a sound reason was provided. Now I don’t mean to paint a picture that 100% of the people were compliant, but the majority was.

Today I notice that the percentage of people who give their word and keep it has dwarfed dramatically. People will make you promises, won’t keep them and go on as if nothing was ever said. The next time you see them, you expect them to offer an explanation for their failure, but it never happens. I can accept this behavior from unbelievers, but not from believers. I hold us to a higher standard.

God called us to be a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people. He has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. Therefore as Christians we should be different. I am not saying that we should be perfect, but we should strive to be above reproach and have a good report of them that are without.

The next time you make someone a promise, stop and think about who you represent. You are an ambassador for Christ. Hence, you always want to make sure that in everything you say and do, you bring honor to His name. And in bringing honor to His name, you will receive a good name.

Keep you word!
