Mid-Year Assessment

July 1, 2016

Can you believe that we are at the half way point in the year? Where has all the time gone. It seems like just yesterday we were at the beginning of the year and setting new goals and objectives for the upcoming year. The bad thing about setting goals is that most of us start out good, but our zeal starts to wane pretty quickly when we see how much work is required to make things happen.

For many who work for a corporation, mid-year reviews are in the process of being completed. First there is the self-evaluation that takes place followed by the completion of the assessment by the manager or supervisor. The ratings are usually in the categories of Exceeds, Meets, Approaches or Unsatisfactory. Most of us would like to receive an “Exceeds” rating because it means we are on track to receive a higher pay raise and it affords us the opportunity to apply for other jobs within the organization with increased responsibilities and larger salaries. The mid-year review points out the areas of strength and where we need improvement so that we can course correct if we need to before year end.

I wonder how many of us take a mid-year review of our Christian walk and rate ourselves on what we committed to God at the beginning of the year. How would we rate ourselves using the Bible as the template for the scoring? What did we promise God as a goal and how are we progressing toward that goal? Did we tell God that we were going to give more in tithes and offerings this year? Did we say to God that we would find a church home and serve in the local ministry? How much more time in prayer and study did we pledge this year? I am sure there are many other questions that we can add to the list, but I am sure you get the point.

I don’t know how you have done in pursuit of your goals and objectives, but since this is the middle of the year, there is still time to improve your rating. All you have to do is pull out your list, then get started if you haven’t already, continue if you are on track, or accelerate in order to finish on time. If you never stop to measure where you are, you cannot determine the progress you made and you are not holding yourself accountable.

The mid-year appraisal would be a good tool to help us stay focused and set the proper metrics for success. The priorities we set for God’s kingdom should not be ignored or forgotten, but pursued with vigor and enthusiasm.
