Unclog Your Spiritual Pipe

November 1 2018

There is so much going on in the world and in our personal lives that if we are not careful, our
spiritual pipe will clog. When you turn on the news, we hear about all the violence, senseless
murders, racial hatred, inclement weather, political ads that leave us speechless and instability
in our economy. Interest rates are on the rise, new home sales are declining, the stock market
takes us on a roller coaster ride on any given day; up 300 points today and down 1,000 the
next. All of this is in addition to working through marital challenges, raising children, attempting
to efficiently manage our finances, employment struggles and other unforeseen events like the
death of a loved one or sickness.

The question is: how do we keep our joy and maintain our peace, stay fervent in spirit and
connected to God during these turbulent and difficult times? The answer is: to stay in the
presence of God at all times. We must read and study His Word daily and then mediate on it
day and night. As bad news surfaces, our mind is stayed on Christ Jesus the author and finisher
of our faith. What comes to clog our spiritual pipe is met with the opposition of God’s Word
that is full of power. It is so powerful that it blows up what tries to take control of our thoughts
and actions.

Recently I had to unclog my sink. I started with a product that wasn’t very effective. When it
failed to do the job, I had to go with a stronger solution. Still the water did not run out as fast as
it should. I finally removed the stopper and used some tools to remove the trappings. It is the
same with our spiritual lives. God’s Word works, but sometimes we allow the world’s trash to
enter and a buildup develops. We try to quote one Scripture in hope that it will solve the issue
completely. When that fails, we can find multiple Scriptures to stand on that become a daily
part of our meditation and devotion. The combination of Scriptures and the inherent power
creates a freedom in our hearts. God’s Word will remove any buildup and simultaneously
promote a healthy spiritual life. Thank God for His Word that never fails and does more than we
can ever expect. Amen.
