He’s in Our Corner

In my early twenties, I became a big boxing fan. My favorite boxers were Muhamad Ali, George Frasier, George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Ken Norton and Evander Holyfield. I especially liked Muhamad Ali because his skill level was far superior to that of his opponents and he brought flair to the sport. He was the greatest Heavy Weight Champion of all times. Evander Holyfield was an under-sized Heavy Weight with a huge heart. What attracted me to the sport was the skill, hard work and resiliency required by the fighters. You couldn’t be lazy or a softie and be an elite boxer. When you got your opponent in trouble, you had to finish the job or you could be affording him the opportunity to come back and knock you out.

When I would watch the fights, I observed that these fighters had great trainers in their corner. They could see weaknesses in their opponents and point them out to their fighter. Many times this would give their fighter an advantage. A great trainer in the corner was like having an extra set of hands and eyes in the ring. Once the fighter started capitalizing on the weaknesses that the trainer pointed out, he would gain confidence and go on to win the fight.

As believers we are like these boxers. We are in a great fight with our opponent, the devil. He is trying to knock us out and defeat us, but with a flurry of punches comprised of a powerful prayer life, consistent meditation on God’s Word, resiliency and persistency, we are prepared to go the distance. We have the spirit of fortitude and a made up mind to fight a good fight. The Lord God Almighty is in our corner and He has given us an advantage. He advises us on the strategy of our opponent. He is familiar with his technique. He has been in the corner of many believers and He has a perfect record. Let’s shout for the victory that God has given us!
