Pull Up the Weeds

November 1 2021

For those who know me, they know I love a well-manicured lawn. I’ve never trusted anyone to mow my lawn so for over thirty-six years I’ve done it myself. The lawn service did not seem to take the same level of care I did. They were always in a hurry to get to the next yard.

For years I bought fertilizer to dispense based on a schedule I found online for my particular grass type. It worked for me because I found it extremely therapeutic. When I would finish cutting, edging, and blowing, I would stand there for a few moments and marvel at my finished product. I was always proud of my work.

Occasionally, weeds would grow in the lawn despite the chemicals I used. When that happened, I would take the time to pull them up. The chemicals were not always effective at killing the root. I literally got down on my knees and pulled them out of the ground. Again I found this soothing and it kept my lawn immaculate.

I could never figure out how the weeds found their way into my lawn, but I was determined their stay would be temporary. I was able to spot them as I rode over the yard while cutting the grass.

Just as I took care to monitor the growth of weeds in my yard, the same care must be given to weeds that start to grow in our spirit. Those weeds come to choke out of us the very Word of God. Spiritual weeds come as a result of our lack of study, diminished prayer time, what we watch on television, who we spend time with, what comes into our hearing, etc. Before we know it, weeds pop up and we find ourselves doing and saying things that are very uncharacteristic and unbecoming of us as Christians. We stop walking in the Spirit and start walking in the flesh.

We must quickly identify any weeds that are present and take prompt action to pull them up. Just as I get down on my knees to pull up the weeds from my lawn, we must get down on our knees in prayer to pull up what is trying to take root in our spirit. In addition to prayer, reading God’s Word will help us to purge weeds. And then meditating on the Word. It will strengthen us and keep us grounded. A healthy lawn helps to choke out weeds. A healthy Spirit will prevent weeds from getting firmly established. Pull up the weeds!
