• Ephesians 2:10
"For we are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."

Your Past Is Like a Weed

March 1 2021

Every plant, tree, flower and all grass types need water to survive. Without it, they will surely die. In the summer time, if you want the weeds in your lawn to die, don’t turn on your sprinkler system and you will see that after a few lawn trims, the weeds will stop raising their ugly heads.

We all have a past. For some of us, it may be something that grieves us and we want to forget it. At the very moment we give our lives to Christ our sins are forgiven and our past is forgotten. Once Christ forgives us, we have to forgive ourselves and move on. Sometimes that is more easily said than done. Christ will never remind us of our past since He has wiped our slate clean. Therefore, if we find ourselves being constantly reminded of the things we did before our new life in Christ, it isn’t The Holy Spirit doing it. It is the devil who doesn’t want us to forget our past so he reminds us of the terrible things we did in order to make us believe that our sins are not forgiven. We know that can’t be true because His Word says that if any person is in Christ, he is a new creation and old things have passed away. The old things that passed away are whatever sins we committed before our new life.

The devil sends thoughts of our past to keep us in bondage. Once we start to focus on what we’ve done, he constantly bombards our minds. The door has been opened and we can’t seem to close it. This is watering the past like a weed. Just as a weed grows from the watering, so will our thoughts about the past. Stop watering them!

Whenever you are reminded of your past, tell yourself you are a new creation in Christ and that whatever you’ve done is covered under the blood. Remind yourself that Jesus paid the price for all of your sins and the work is finished. If you do this enough times and believe this in your heart, the devil will give up and flee from you. You will experience a drought in your thoughts about your past and pretty soon only your future in Christ will take root and grow. Enjoy the life Christ intended for you to have in Him.
