Praise the Lord

June 1 2022

May is the month we honor our mothers, pay respect to those who died while serving in the U.S. military and celebrate those who are graduating from Elementary, Middle School, High School and College. I have seen more graduation signs in yards this year than in the past. I am sure COVID has a lot to do with the increase.

I was honored to attend my best friend’s daughter’s college graduation. They have done an exceptional job as parents and she has not let them down. She graduated with honors from one of the top schools in the nation.

As with most graduations that take place, there is a lot of family support at the commencement ceremony. When the graduate walks across the stage, all the family members and friends jump up and down and yell out the person’s name. I have attended graduations where the person presiding has asked the audience to be respectful and not behave in such an “unruly manner”. However, at this graduation, the person overseeing the event encouraged the behavior. She said “this is the first graduation we have had in two years and we have reasons to be excited”. She even encouraged the use of noise makers for those who came equipped with them.

As the students came upon the stage to receive their diploma and their names were called, the supporters yelled as instructed. The convention center was nonstop with cheers and praises for the graduates from family members and friends. I was really taken aback by something that occurred when the name of one student was called. In the midst of the noise being at levels that was almost unbearable, you could hear a single voice of a supporter say, “praise the Lord”. This man did not shout his family member’s name. He just said in a still but strong voice, “praise the Lord”. He was acknowledging God for the family member’s accomplishment. What I found amazing was that the mention of those three words brought about a complete quietness in the auditorium of hundreds for about thirty seconds. Everything seemed to come to a momentary standstill. It was long enough for the words spoken to be absorbed into the hearts and minds of every person in attendance. It was an attention getter for sure. I thought to myself, how wonderful!

His name is still above every name and His name is worthy to be praised, even in the midst of our celebrations. Lord we will forever praise thy glorious and holy name.
