A Merry Heart Makes Us Feel Better

August 1 2015

Over the course of my life; I have had the pleasure to interact with people who are always upbeat and eternally optimistic. I enjoy their enthusiasm and gregarious personality. They make no effort to display a genuine smile that is infectious. And they seem to be able to smile irrespective of the circumstance or situation. These people are always a joy to be around.

As I have interacted with people like these both in the workplace and at church, I notice that their "merry heart" seems to act like a preventative medicine for them. Nothing seems to get them down and they walk in good health. Research has proven categorically that people who are consistently cheerful live longer lives than a person who often complains and is disgruntled with life.

The Word of God tells us in Proverbs 17:22 That "A merry heart does good like medicine". God in His infinite wisdom tells us that we should be cheerful and that cheerfulness will act like a medicine in our bodies. The chemicals released in our bodies connected to a smile are better for us than those connected to a frown.

When we think about the wonderful and awesome God who loved us so much that He sent His son to die for us, it should produce a "merry heart". Consequently, we should wear a heartfelt smile on our faces that lets the world know that there is an inexhaustible reservoir of joy down on the inside of us. And it produces a divine medicine that keeps us happy and whole.
