You Need A Good Support System

I have enjoyed running my entire life. It helps me to manage my weight and reach my health goals. At age 67, I still like the thrill of competing in local races. I have never won a major race, but I run each race as if I am going to win. Anyone who knows me understands that I am a competitor by nature.

Since my wife passed seven weeks ago, I have been in the race of my life. I am competing at my highest level. My goal is to finish and to finish strong.

During every race, there are periods when you start to lag a little due to exhaustion. What restores your energy and motivation are the people who are lined up along the street to cheer you on. They’re yelling and encouraging you every step of the way.

In the race that I am in right now, I have people who are lined up and encouraging me every step of the way. They make phone calls, visit me at my house, invite me over for dinner, send cards, take me out to breakfast or dinner, send text messages and even plan golf outings. I feel an abundance of support.

This level of support helps me push through the pain to the finish line. The words of encouragement offered at the right time have made the difference between finishing well and collapsing along the way.

A strong support system fosters stability when you face adversity. We all need cheerleaders along the way. That’s why Paul says to us in I Thessalonians 5:11, wherefore comfort yourselves together and edify one another, even as also ye do.

I can’t phantom how many lives have been spared due to the gracious support of fellow believers. Someone came out of darkness and was delivered from despair through words spoken by family and friends. God demonstrated that He is the lifter of our heads and our sustainer. He placed key individuals in our lives to help us finish the race. Let’s finish strong! And as we cross the finish line, give Him the glory and the praise due to Him.
